Figuring out what to build for your product or service
3 simple ways to spot and solve customer problems
Let’s make it clearer with an example: Designing a new keyboard for kids
To find out what’s bothering our customers, we first check how well the current stuff does its job.
There are 3 ways to do that:
#1: To get the real scoop on what’s bothering a user, we just ask them.
This happens during discovery calls where we chat and find out what’s going…
If our product has different users, like kids, parents, and teachers, we might need to look at each group separately.
For example, here are some questions to ask:
How are kids doing when they’re learning to type on a regular keyboard?
Why do you think it’s not great, or why give it a not-so-good rating?
If something’s off, ask why.
What’s not so good about it?
What would make things better for you?
#2: We try to understand how things feel or what their experience is like using our product by just watching how they use our stuff.
Using the example of designing a keyboard for kids, here are a few ways to go about it:
See how our stuff deals what it’s supposed to do
Check if kids have trouble putting their fingers on the keyboard while learning to type
Find out if a completing tasks such as coding take too long for kids using a regular keyboard
#3 Is using data and analytics to track inefficiencies without actively monitoring or engaging with the customer.
Here are some tools to help you do that:
Utilize user engagement data to analyze how kids are using the keyboard
Implement error tracking metrics to identify patters of mistakes made by kids
Leverage feature usage analytics to determine which aspects of the keyboard design are popular among kids and which ones they may find less intuitive
Using these methods to find your customer pain points allows you to tailor your design strategy for a better, more user-friendly keyboard experience for kids
Therefore, essentially, this is how you build products that differentiate and add value.
And how you build products that are worth buying.
